1920’s Charleston Girls: All dancers will wear a headache band over forehead with a feather accent.
Medium to long hair- gather hair into a bun at the base of the neck, arranging side hair over the ears rather than pulled tightly behind them. Shorter hair- curl hair or leave it straight, parted on one side and pinned back. |
Charleston Boys: Use hair gel or another product to hold in place. Hair should be parted on one side and slicked back for a traditional men's hairstyle.

Latin Girls:
Hair worn in sleek, low bun at base of neck. Use gel or hairspray to smooth hair. Insert flower on the right side of the bun where it meets head. For short hair, part hair on the side and slick back. Pin in place with bobby pins. Wear flower behind right ear. |
Latin Boys: Use hair gel or another product to hold in place. Hair should be parted on one side and slicked back for a traditional men's hairstyle.

Russian Girls: Hair parted down the middle and braided into two braids. Braids are folded back up and pinned in place on to form a loop on each side of head. Tiara is worn back from the hairline at least 1 inch. and elastic runs under braids.

Hairstyles and Make-up
African Girl: Hair is worn loose with headband covering hairline and running underneath hair at back of neck. Hair can be braided into small braids or braided wet, then dried and undone to form waves or curled and back combed for more volume. Dancers with short hair should create as much volume as possible so that hair is visible above headband.

Square Dance: Hair is worn half up, half down with a blue ribbon clip attached. Dancers with short hair will have a bow clip to wear on one side.

Tips for shopping:
Check your local Goodwill or resale shop for costume items that you don’t already have; especially shoes, boots, shirts or any other things you won’t use again.
Fishnet Stockings: Halloween is a great time to get these. Check online and the costume sections.
Boys Dance Shoes: These need to be black and have a smooth leather sole, otherwise the design is not important (think the kind of shoes your grandpa probably wears to church). Goodwill is a great place to find these cheap.
Girls Dance Shoes: You can often find women’s character shoes at Goodwill.
Bicycle Shorts: For modesty when dancing and should come to mid thigh—no "boy shorts."
